Our Spiritual Origin

Before we had physical bodies, God knew us. We are not accidents of nature — we are deliberate creations of the Most High, formed with intention and purpose from the very beginning.

Genesis 2:7
"And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul."
God didn't just build a body — He breathed His own life-force into us. The Hebrew word for "breath" here is neshamah, the same word used for God's own Spirit. Our life originates directly from God's breath.
Jeremiah 1:5
"Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations."
God knew us before our physical formation. This implies a spiritual existence or awareness in God's mind before our earthly life began. We were set apart with purpose before birth.
Ecclesiastes 12:7
"Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it."
The spirit returns to God — meaning it came from God in the first place. Our bodies are temporary vessels made of earth, but our spirit has a divine origin and a divine destination.
Zechariah 12:1
"The burden of the word of the LORD for Israel, saith the LORD, which stretcheth forth the heavens, and layeth the foundation of the earth, and formeth the spirit of man within him."
God is identified as the one who forms the spirit within each person — placed alongside His creation of the heavens and earth, showing how significant our spiritual creation is.
Job 33:4
"The Spirit of God hath made me, and the breath of the Almighty hath given me life."
Our very existence is a spiritual act. We are made by the Spirit and sustained by God's breath. We are inherently spiritual beings having a human experience.
Psalm 139:13-14
"For thou hast possessed my reins: thou hast covered me in my mother's womb. I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well."
We are not random — we are fearfully and wonderfully made, crafted with precision and care by a God who was intimately involved in every detail of our creation.
02

Created in the Image of God

We bear the image of our Creator. Since God is Spirit, we too are fundamentally spiritual beings. Our physical body is a vessel, but our truest identity reflects the nature of God Himself.

Genesis 1:27
"So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them."
Since God is Spirit (John 4:24), being made in His image means we are fundamentally spiritual beings. Our spirit — not our physical body — is what reflects God's likeness.
John 4:24
"God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth."
This is the foundational truth: God IS Spirit. And genuine connection with God happens spirit-to-spirit, not through outward rituals alone. True worship flows from the inner spirit.
John 3:6
"That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit."
Jesus draws a clear distinction: flesh produces flesh, Spirit produces spirit. Our spiritual rebirth is a separate, higher birth — born of God's Spirit, making us spiritual beings in a new way.
2 Corinthians 3:18
"But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord."
We are being progressively transformed into God's image — not physically, but spiritually. The Spirit of the Lord is the agent of this transformation, glory upon glory.
03

Our Purpose on Earth in Human Form

Why are spiritual beings placed in physical bodies on earth? Scripture reveals that this life is a proving ground — a place to choose, to grow, to glorify God, and to be transformed.

Deuteronomy 30:19
"I call heaven and earth to record this day against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing: therefore choose life, that both thou and thy seed may live."
Our earthly life is a place of choice. God sets life and death before us and calls us to choose life. This choosing is central to our purpose — we must freely choose God.
Romans 12:1-2
"I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind."
Our bodies are the offering, our minds are the battlefield. We are here to offer ourselves wholly to God and to be transformed — not to fit the world's mold but to be renewed from the inside out.
1 Corinthians 6:19-20
"What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's."
Our physical body has a sacred purpose — it is a temple for God's Spirit. We are here to house and manifest God's presence in the earth. Our purpose is to glorify God in both body and spirit.
Ephesians 2:10
"For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them."
We were created for good works that God prepared in advance. Our purpose is not random — it was ordained before we even arrived. We are God's masterpiece with a mission.
Micah 6:8
"He hath shewed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the LORD require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God?"
Our purpose distilled to its essence: justice, mercy, and humble communion with God. Simple, yet profoundly spiritual.
Matthew 5:16
"Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven."
We are here to be light — to let God's Spirit shine through our human form so that others see Him through us.
04

The Spirit vs. Flesh Battle

Living in a physical body creates a tension. The flesh has its own desires that war against the Spirit. Understanding this battle is crucial to walking in victory as the spiritual beings we truly are.

Galatians 5:17
"For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would."
There is a real war within us. The flesh and the Spirit have opposing agendas. Recognizing this battle is the first step to choosing which side to feed and empower.
Galatians 5:19-21
"Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like."
The flesh produces visible, destructive fruit. These aren't just "bad habits" — they are the natural output of a life lived according to the flesh rather than the Spirit.
Galatians 5:22-23
"But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance: against such there is no law."
The Spirit produces beautiful, life-giving fruit. These qualities emerge naturally when we walk by the Spirit — they are evidence of spiritual life within us.
Romans 7:22-23
"For I delight in the law of God after the inward man: But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members."
Even Paul experienced this war. The inward man (spirit) delights in God, but the flesh fights back. This is the universal human-spiritual struggle.
Ephesians 6:12
"For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places."
Our real battle isn't physical — it's spiritual. The enemies we face are spiritual forces. This is why we must be spirit-minded to fight effectively.
1 Peter 2:11
"Dearly beloved, I beseech you as strangers and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts, which war against the soul."
We are strangers and pilgrims here — this world is not our home. Fleshly lusts literally wage war against our soul. We must see ourselves as travelers passing through.
05

Being Spiritually Minded

This is the key to everything. Scripture makes it clear: to be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. Our mindset determines our spiritual trajectory.

Romans 8:5-6
"For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit. For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace."
This is one of the most critical verses in all of Scripture on this topic. Your mind determines your path — flesh-mindedness leads to death, spirit-mindedness leads to life and peace. It's that clear.
Romans 8:1
"There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit."
Walking after the Spirit removes condemnation. Our daily walk — our choices, thoughts, and focus — must be Spirit-directed, not flesh-directed.
Romans 8:9-11
"But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his... But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you."
The same Spirit that raised Christ from the dead lives in believers. This Spirit gives life to our mortal bodies. Being spiritually minded means recognizing and yielding to this power within us.
Romans 8:14
"For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God."
Being led by the Spirit is the defining mark of being God's children. Spirit-mindedness isn't optional — it's what identifies us as belonging to God.
Colossians 3:2
"Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth."
Being spiritually minded is an intentional act — we must actively set our affection, our focus, our desires on heavenly things. It's a daily discipline of redirecting our attention.
Ephesians 4:23-24
"And be renewed in the spirit of your mind; And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness."
Our minds must be continually renewed in spirit. This renewal enables us to "put on the new man" — the spiritual identity God created for us in righteousness.
Galatians 5:16
"This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh."
Walking in the Spirit is the antidote to fleshly desires. It's not about suppressing the flesh by willpower alone — it's about being so filled with the Spirit that the flesh loses its grip.
Romans 12:2
"And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God."
Transformation comes through mind renewal. Being spiritually minded means actively resisting the world's mold and allowing God's Spirit to reshape how we think.
06

The New Creature in Christ

When we are born again in the Spirit, we become entirely new creations. The old passes away. We put off the old man and put on the new — a spiritual transformation at the deepest level.

2 Corinthians 5:17
"Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new."
In Christ, we are completely new. Not improved, not reformed — new. The old spiritual identity dies and a new one is born.
John 3:3-7
"Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God... That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again."
Jesus says this is non-negotiable: you MUST be born again. This spiritual rebirth is what makes us true spiritual beings — born not just of flesh, but of God's Spirit.
Colossians 3:9-10
"…seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds; And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him."
The new man is being renewed in knowledge after God's image. This is the ongoing process — continually growing into the spiritual image of our Creator.
2 Corinthians 4:16
"For which cause we faint not; but though our outward man perish, yet the inward man is renewed day by day."
The body ages and decays, but the spirit — the inward man — gets stronger every day. Our true self is being renewed even as the physical fades.
Romans 8:16
"The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God."
God's Spirit communicates directly with our spirit, confirming our identity as His children. This spirit-to-spirit witness is how we know we belong to God.
07

Our Eternal Destiny

This physical life is temporary. Our spirit came from God and will return to God. The body is a tent — temporary housing for the eternal spirit within us.

2 Corinthians 5:1-8
"For we know that if our earthly house of this tabernacle were dissolved, we have a building of God, an house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens... We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord."
Our body is a temporary tent. When it's gone, we have an eternal dwelling with God. Paul preferred being absent from the body to be present with the Lord — because our true home is spiritual.
1 Corinthians 15:42-44
"So also is the resurrection of the dead. It is sown in corruption; it is raised in incorruption... It is sown a natural body; it is raised a spiritual body. There is a natural body, and there is a spiritual body."
Our final destiny involves a spiritual body — incorruptible, glorious, powerful. The natural body is just the seed; the spiritual body is the harvest.
Genesis 3:19
"In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return."
The body returns to dust — but notice, only the body. The spirit (Ecclesiastes 12:7) returns to God. We are more than dust.
Philippians 3:20-21
"For our conversation is in heaven; from whence also we look for the Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ: Who shall change our vile body, that it may be fashioned like unto his glorious body."
Our citizenship ("conversation") is in heaven. Our bodies will be transformed to be like Christ's glorious, spiritual body. This is our ultimate destiny as spirit beings.
1 John 3:2
"Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is."
Our final form hasn't been fully revealed yet, but when Christ appears, we will be like Him. We will fully realize our spiritual nature in His presence.
